Project Description:

Brixton is one of London’s most characterful and vibrant town centres, and is ‘on the list’ for many foreign visitors to London. Brixton BID came into being on 1st January 2014 and The means has been managing it since May 2014, with Michael A Smith as BID Director. The board is chaired by Elly Foster, owner of Satay Bar, and includes the 02 Academy, Brixton Market, Morley’s, Market House, Sackville Travel, Healthy Eaters, McDonalds, Miss Cupcake, Hype Coiffure and The Courtesan.

Brixton BID’s work is divided into three programmes – Marketing, Partnerships and Environment. Among the BID’s recent projects are:

  • A green infrastructure audit to highlight the opportunities for new green infrastructure in the area. This will also work to tackle London’s growing Air Quality problem.
  • Further measures to improve the environment, including anti-urination initiatives, deep cleaning, technician services.
  • Comprehensive training and support programme for businesses – notably retailers. The BID works with Lambeth Council and local training providers to provide apprenticeship workshops and encourages the use of local young talent in Brixton into Brixton jobs.
  • Joint procurement – businesses make savings on a variety of utilities such as gas, electricity, insurance, printing, waste collection and stationary. Savings have amounted to upwards of £3300 for energy in one business alone.
  • Support for Brixton Design Trail, as part of the London Design Festival in 2015 and 2016.
