Project Description:

Brixton BID came into being on 1st January 2014 and The means took on the task of managing the organisation from May 2014 to 2017, with a team including Michael Smith who is now BID Director.

The board is chaired by Elly Foster, owner of Satay Bar, and includes the 02 Academy, Brixton Market, Morley’s, Market House, Sackville Travel, Healthy Eaters, McDonalds, Miss Cupcake, Hype Coiffure and The Courtesan.

Brixton BID’s work is divided into three programmes – Marketing, Partnerships and Environment. Projects delivered during the means’ management include:

  • A green infrastructure audit to highlight the opportunities for new green infrastructure in the area, to help tackle London’s growing Air Quality problem.
  • Further measures to improve the environment, including anti-urination initiatives, deep cleaning, technician services.
  • Comprehensive training and support programme for businesses – notably retailers. The BID works with Lambeth Council and local training providers to provide apprenticeship workshops and encourages the use of local young talent in Brixton into Brixton jobs.
  • Joint procurement – businesses make savings on a variety of utilities such as gas, electricity, insurance, printing, waste collection and stationary. Savings have amounted to upwards of £3,300 for energy in one business alone.
  • Support for Brixton Design Trail, as part of the London Design Festival.
  • Facilitation of Brixton’s vital Night Time Economy Forum, including partnership with Lambeth’s Business Crime Reduction Partnership.
