The Means were commissioned in January 2016 by Vision Stockport, to provide advice on the feasibility of developing a Business Improvement District (BID) in Stockport Town Centre.
Stockport is one of the largest towns in the Greater Manchester metropolitan area, located just seven miles south-east from Manchester city centre. Today Stockport is reliant on a much more varied set of businesses, from a variety of sectors. Like many towns and cities in the North West, it has been working hard to attract new businesses and regenerate both its commercial and residential property offer, whilst preserving its rich industrial heritage.
The study has sought to establish the feasibility of setting up a Business Improvement District (BID) in Stockport town centre. Over 100 businesses in the town centre have been engaged through face to face interviews and an open Visioning Event on 16 March 2016. The results of the survey showed that a BID could address many of the issues identified by the businesses by adopting three priority areas of activity:
The second stage of the project includes the development of BID proposal, consultation with businesses and ballot scheduled for autumn 2016.
